Ascending inland on the western side of Thassos Island the wide green valley of Prinos, one reaches the churches of Ag. Georgios and Charalambos in an ancient grove of oak trees. A monastery stood at the beginning of the settlement that developed from there uphill. The monks cultivated chestnut trees („kastanies“). And over the centuries a lush forest of these and other broadleaf trees spread towards the towering rocky scenery further above. A cool crystal clear stream keeps this lush natural oasis alive all the year round.
In this superb setting, at the upper periphery of the village, Georgios („Giorgos“) Doukas realised his vision of Kastanies. And now he can be rightly proud of his achievement of three years own building work. One can instantly sense his intense and caring relation to the natural assets of this true oasis. And both the external design of his guest houses and the immaculate interior reflect the surrounding living nature as much as the village heritage. Jorgos spent his own childhood in this traditional village environment. How delicate appears the course of the mountain stream as he guided it over gentle steps to pools in the shade of his beloved trees!

The hotel and restaurant Tsigoura was built with European financial subsidies. It occupies two large terraces right at the edge of an antique settlement and workshop for amphoras and other archaelogical remains. Residents of Kazaviti opposed the hotel project, also out of environmental reasons. Three red-listed species of birds and reptiles (e.g. the land tortoise Testudo graeca) live there. But as our objections were not considered by the authorities, we now rather support this hotel enterprise and assist in opening walkways into the wilderness of the slopes and gorge further uphill. So that the limited sacrifice of natural landscape, fauna and flora will be balanced by the unique potential of the surroundings for cultural excursions and walking tours. Hotel Tsigoura is situated at the heart of the area that provides ideal conditions for nature and cultural (archaeological) tourism.
The name Tsigoura was given to the village of Kazaviti during the Turkish occupation. So it may now stand for the end of adverse feelings between the two neighbouring states – another good reason to support Hotel Tsigoura, being operated
